Home Quotebox About

Quotebox is a little diversion designed to provide random quotes for your amusement. There are currently 22 quotes in the database. Each one has been weighted by the approval or disapproval of our users such that most popular ones are more likely to be shown than least popular ones. In fact, very unpopular quotes will disappear entirely. Hopefully this will cut down on abuse. But, be aware, these quotes are submitted by random internet users and may contain abusive or offensive language. These quotes in no way reflect the opinions of the author of this net gadget or of the site administrators.

The author reserves the right to alter, remove, and change the opinion value of quotes at any time and for any reason

About quote scoring: Quotes start with a score of 10 when they are entered. A Yea! vote will increase a score by 1 and a Nay! vote will decrease a score by 1. Any score zero or less will make a quote effectively invisible. Unless all quotes become zero or less. There is currently no upper bound, so a score of 1000 would probably make that quote the only one visible. The author will likely adjust the scoring method in the future. The current method was tossed in with little contemplation.

Quotebox was scripted in PHP 4 and uses a PostgreSQL database server. It is hosted on a Pentium 133 with 32MB of RAM running Debian GNU/Linux behind the author's home 384Kbps SDSL connection. While the computer isn't exactly a powerhouse, it manages to serve dynamic web pages and run a modern database server while at the same time managing connectivity for the author's workstations and hosting several other services. If you aren't already an open-source geek, you should become one. Quotebox was coded entirely with the VIM (VI iMproved) editor and was tested most thoroughly with the Mozilla open-source web browser and will always look best when viewed with it. (Not very) Surprisingly, standards-bending browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer render it the most poorly.
